The Power of Music

by Tishelle Betterman

Music is a universal form of communication transcending barriers of class and origin. It embraces musician and spectator alike in the expression of emotions. The effect of sound on our minds, bodies, and souls is both direct and subtle. Musical vibrations compel us to react physically with a whistle, hum, or dance; yet, simultaneously, there is another powerful reaction taking place within our mind and soul. We are surrounded by music. It is heard in nature, in music halls, and within ourselves. Music influences us everyday whether we are aware of the sounds or not.

Despite being the most subtle form of art, music has the greatest impact on our lives. Its rhythms, harmonies, and tonalities energize our body, stimulate our mind, and raise our spiritual consciousness. As all living beings, we are highly susceptible to both the negative and positive influences in our everyday lives. These invisible forces directly affect our well-being, and in the worse cases can create physical illness, emotional imbalance and spiritual confusion. Music is a powerful healer. Each musical note produces a different vibratory wave. These waves penetrate our aura and affect a shift in our being. On a physical level, they create healthy cells and balance our nervous system; on an emotional level, they release tension and enable us to search our feelings; on a spiritual level, they lift us to a higher point of consciousness and connect us with our inner guidance.

The beginning of our connection with music starts at a young age. Before a child even learns to speak, he reacts to music. Twirling in circles, twisting at the waist, or bending at the knees, he responds to songs on the radio or television. Our relationship with sound and rhythm continues to grow throughout life. We use the energy of sound to support and encourage us in our lives, especially on a more personal level. Unconsciously, we select music that speaks to our moods. People, like earth, alternate between major and minor moods, corresponding to the major and minor keys in music. The minor keys help us develop subjectivity and the major ones impel us to be outgoing and creative. We naturally feel compelled to listen to a specific style of music or one that is of a specific key (major or minor) based on our physical, emotional, or spiritual needs at that moment in our lives. Music that is primarily rhythmic, impacts the physical body; music that is essentially melodic, deals with the emotions; and music that is harmonic affects the spiritual energies.

The musician, aware of the power of harmony, rhythm, tonality, and style, focuses on these components to express the emotional meaning behind the notes on a page. Consumed by the desire to bond the audience in the flight of music, the performer challenges us to soar with him and experience more than a melody; he asks us to absorb ourselves in the richness of sound. The infectious feeling of rhythm, melody, and harmony spreads from the performer to the individual spectators eliciting an immediate response and a return of the heightened emotion back to the musician. Because of our natural reaction to the power of sound, we form a bond not just with music but also with one another.

Musical sound is one of nature’s most stimulating contributions to life. Not only is it within us, but it also surrounds us. The trees whistle a tune as the wind moves through them. The grass adds its harmony. A thundering waterfall provides its percussion to the tune while ocean waves beat on the shore in time. The melodic chirping of a bird sings a morning melody. Music is varied and complex, individual and collective, unique and expressive. Stop. Listen. Hear. Experience. Music is all about us.
