Pure essential oils are highly concentrated and if not used properly could be harmful. Please read the safety information provided on the label of each oil and included with your order. With proper use, aromatherapy can be an effect and fun tool to use in your life.
Always check all specific safety data before using a new oil. You may find this information in combination on this site, in aromatherapy books, and on the aromatherapy labels. NEVER USE AROMATHERAPY PRODUCTS NEAR YOUR EYES.
Consult a professional aromatherapist before taking aromatherapy oils internally. Essential oils may damage the lining of the digestive tract and some essential oils are toxic if taken internally.
Aromatherapy oils that should be used in moderation because of toxicity levels when absorbed through the skin are: aniseed, West Indian bay, white camphor, clove bud, coriander, eucalyptus blue gum, hyssop, nutmeg, sweet fennel, parsley seed, Spanish sage, tagetes, and thyme.
Pennyroyal, mustard, sassafras, rue, and mugwort should not be used at all and are not included on this site.
In general, essential oils should not be applied neat (directly) to the skin. Exceptions are lavender and tea tree. Non-irritant oils such as jasmine, ylang ylang, or sandalwood may be applied neat for use as a perfume. Despite the fact that a majority of individuals do not negatively respond to these oils when used neat, it is still highly recommended that each person test a small patch of skin on their wrist or hand to test for irritation.
Before applying any new oil to the skin, do a patch test. Put a few drops on the back of your wrist and leave for an hour. If irritation or redness occurs, bathe with cold water. For future use, reduce the recommended concentration level by half or avoid using the oil altogether.
Neat tea tree may cause skin irritation in people with very sensitive skin. These people should dilute it first in a non-oily cream, carrier oil or gel. Oils that may cause an adverse reaction on very sensitive skin, even when diluted, include benzoin, lemon eucalyptus, melissa, tagetes, valerian, yarrow, and skin irritant oils.
Oils that may irritate the skin, especially in high concentrations are: ainseed, sweet basil, black pepper, cajeput, white camphor, Virginian cedarwood, cinnamon leaf, clove bud, eucalyptus blue gum, ginger, juniper, lemon, lemongrass, parsley see, peppermint, pine needle, and thyme. Do not use more than 3 drops of these oils in the bath.
Oils that can cause adverse reaction if used before exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light (e.g. sun beds) are: angelica root, bergamot, lime, bitter orange, lemon, grapefruit, sweet orange, and tangerine.
Always increase the dilution for babies and infants to at least half the recommended amount. For babies, avoid the possibly toxic and irritant oils altogether. for babies 0 - 12 months: use only 1 drop of lavender, rose, or chamomile oil, diluted in 1 tsp/5ml carrier oil for massage or bathing (do not use other oils).
For infants 1 - 5 years: use only 2 - 3 drops of any of the nontoxic and nonirritant oils, diluted in 1 tsp/5ml carrier oil for massage or bathing.
For children 6 - 12 years: use as for adults but in half the stated concentration.
During pregnancy, use aromatherapy oils in half the stated amount. do not use oils that are potentially toxic or have emmenagogue properties. Avoid altogether: basil, Virginian cedarwood, celery seed, clary sage, clove, cinnamon leaf, citronella, hyssop, juniper, marjoram, myrrh, nutmeg, Spanish sage, and thyme. Avoid during the first four months: angelica root, Atlas cedarwood, sweet fennel, rose, and rosemary.
Avoid using the following oils in any form in cases of high blood pressure: rosemary, Spanish sage, and thyme.
Avoid using the following oils in cases of epilepsy: fennel, hyssop, rosemary, and Spanish sage.
Clary sage should not be used in any form within a few hours (before or after) drinking alcohol. It can cause nausea and exaggerated drunkenness.
Homeopathic treatment is not compatible with the following oils, due to their strength: black pepper, camphor, eucalyptus, and peppermint.
Store oils and blends in dark, well-stoppered bottles, kept away from light and heat, and well out of reach of children. Label bottles clearly.
