Poverty Consciousness

Most of us desire financial security in our lives and yet often we find struggle ensues.  We work hard, pay our taxes and after rent and other essentials find not a whole lot left over.  Some of save a bit on the way, yet it still does not seem like enough to accomplish the things we want to do now or in the future.  Why is that?  It comes down to our thinking and beliefs about money.

Poverty consciousness is quite prevalent in our society.  Some feel that they don't deserve to be well-off for many reasons.  We feel guilty that we have more than the rest of our family or that there may be  pressure to help family out if we have financial wealth.  Or perhaps we feel conflict about having money yet also being spiritual or religious.  Often we think if we are really spiritual beings that we cannot have a lot of money or things - that it goes against the idea of being spiritual.  This is all false!

God wants us to be happy because if we are not, we cannot focus on our work or purpose in life.  He wants us to be comfortable and if that means having that home we always wanted or traveling, that is what He wants us to have.  So all that is holding us back from achieving this is our false beliefs surrounding money.  Money is an energy.  It is okay to have an abundance of it;  they key is WHAT you do with it.  If we were to squander it, we would be wasting that energy.  But if instead, we used that money to purchase the house that would give us an extra bedroom to conduct business out of or travel to learn about new cultures and people or further our training or education, this is all worthwhile because it contributes ultimately to our work.  Do you see the difference?

Yes, we still want to give 10% of our money to causes that help people help themselves.  That money comes back to us tenfold, but we also desire money to create the environment we need to fulfill our life purpose.

It is possible that we adopted some our beliefs and feelings about money from our parents, family and friends.  If we had a parent that spoke about how hard they worked and how little money they received from it, as a child we may have formed the belief that it takes a lot of hard work to earn a living.  However, this is not any more true than the fact that a dog can lay eggs.  It does not have to be difficult or take a long time acquire money.  Again, it comes down to our individual beliefs about the subject.

SAYING

In order to reach the final goal of freeing oneself of suffering, it is not enough to just understand the Essential Universal Truths if we don't apply them in our daily lives. We must use daily cultivation to slowly modify our body and mind.

---Heart Sutra

MEDITATION

Spend time this week thinking about your childhood and the beliefs about money those around you held.  Did you adopt those as your own?  How many beliefs about money or making money do you have?  Try to list out as many as you can.  Spend time thinking about comments people have made to you in conversation or matter-of-factly that struck true to you at the time.

EXERCISE

Once you've identified your beliefs about money, replace each one of them with a TRUE statement based on what you've just learned.  For example, if you currently believe it takes three weeks of full-time work to earn your mortgage or rent payment, create a new statement to replace the old.  Something like, I earn my rent payment in less than a week, or I create abundance in my life - I pay for my all my bills plus have $500 left over each month.  You create a statement that works for you.  Try to use some of the higher vibration words we talked about in one of our meditations.
